Some Chicago Boyz know each other from student days at the University of Chicago. Others are Chicago boys in spirit. The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago boys including those pictured above.

George, I agree completely. Nixon was willing to diss his conservative supporters to capture the center. I think Bush/Rove ar very much like Nixon in the way they make political calculations. I don't mean that as a pejorative. They plan to win while facing a very polarized and closely divided electorate. They believe that politics must precede policy, which means compromises which some of your friends won't like. Nixon went to an extreme, but those were extreme times.

Lex--Not only did Nixon alientate many in his base in 1972 with "his pre-election spending tsunami," he also alienated those folks with his creation of the EPA in 1970 and, most of all, with the imposition of wage and price controls in August, 1971.

Yet he still won a landslide electoral college victory. McGovern and "the kids" repelled America even more than Nixon (though the popular vote wasn't as lopsided as the electoral college vote.)

Very nice piece. Even if Bush loses in November, and I think he could, he will have a place in history as a stand up guy. We had two choices in Iraq in March 2003. We could pack up and go home, letting the sanctions expire. I wonder if Riverbend, the Iraqi blogger who is so anti-American, would have preferred that course. Before 9/11, I think I would have voted for that decision. We could not keep up the sanctions indefinitely. We had the worst of all worlds with the left complaining about Iraqi children starving and Saddam rewarding the French and Germans for evading the sanctions they had voted for. The other choice was what we did. I do resent all the straw man arguments now appearing in the Democratic Party. At least McGovern, whatever you may think about him, said what he thought and took the consequences.
