Some Chicago Boyz know each other from student days at the University of Chicago. Others are Chicago boys in spirit. The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago boys including those pictured above.

I live in the land of writers and academia and, yes, they are not serious people. Like most of the Left, they are in abject, fearful denial of reality. Their world view is crumbling and they clamber over each other asserting their superior sensitivity to save themselves, as if that ever saved anyone. One colleague, for example, loudly proclaimed her "sympathies to the parents" when Uday and Qusay were killed. I knew it was over: the Age of Reason devolved into the Age of Narcissism.

If some group of people slaughters thousands of your countrymen and promises to persist in the practice, you had damned well better be serious about it. Life and death -- it doesn't get much more serious. Protecting the people who love and depend on you from a homicidal, nihilistic death cult -- that seems serious to me. It could be that some people are themselves trivial, incapable of taking anything but themselves seriously.

BTW, someone must pay you to write in real life, right?

For a third time, Brava and Amen, Ginny! (This time, however, I have inflected properly.) I guess there is a similar lack of seriousness among some on the Right (Pat Buchanan and his ilk, perhaps), but the condition seems much more endemic to the Left. In line with j scott's comment, the Lefties now dither about the meaning of 'collaborative' instead of 'is.' Instead of contemplating our navels or imputing our own petty hatreds to the Islamists, we should aspire to the heights described by Shakespeare in Hamlet, keeping our feet firmly on ground all the while by never forgeting the last line of the speech:

What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculty! In form and moving how express and admirable! In action how like an angel! In apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the world! The paragon of animals! And yet . . . this quintessence of dust!

Ginny,

That was a fine and thoughtful, if depressing, piece. Thanks for posting it. I find it increasingly harder to even write about such things, so outrageous and sickening do I find the behavior of the Left these days.

"That is what we would know if we were serious."

I wonder if, even after 9/11, we are capable of being serious. This is the nation who had the "summer of the shark" or Gary Condit as news worth 24/7 coverage while the rest of the world was burning down. Now we're back to Scott Peterson, Coby Bryant...and John Edward's "Two Americas".

At 10:00pm on Nov. 2, we'll know if this nation is serious about anything anymore...and I fear we're not.--s
