The predictably and sometimes quite bitterly witty The Diplomad is closing down after a mere seven months. The perspective of the “far abroad” from a beseiged (if a bit curmudgeonly) Republican at State will be missed.

Hopefully Condi recognized his brilliance for what it was worth and elevated him to a position to use it to the betterment of the nation… aaaah, one can hope.

Man, terrible news! One of my favorite blogs.

May I observe that we are thankful to hear from Steven den Beste – we get him in appetizers now when we used to get him in five-course meals. But we are grateful for what we do get. (I guess I really screwed up that metaphor – but I don’t know what to do with the free ice cream one.)

Sullivan’s quitting and he even gets paid to do it. Of course, his last post that ignores the planned post-election reduction in troops reminds me of why he has gone from being one of my favorites to someone I only check in on every once in a while. But he writes well, thinks in interesting patterns, and had pretty good ideas (like his book club) and entrepreneurial ones (though leaving the “tipping point” up when he’s quitting seems to me, well, not exactly the sign of an ethical service business.)
