  1. One of the few good things that Jefferson did as president was to build the spar deck frigates, which were about half way between a ship of the line and a frigate by British standards. There were six of them and, had Jefferson built ships of the line, the 1812 war would have been quite different. The US had a strong tradition of seamanship and the big frigates were overmanned, in contrast to the British pressed crews.
