Some Chicago Boyz know each other from student days at the University of Chicago. Others are Chicago boys in spirit. The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago boys including those pictured above.

No offense taken. It's difficult to evaluate what a government could have done or anticipated - there's too many people, too many assets, and too many confounding factors that may or may not be relevant. I don't know if a rapid response to a surprise disaster of this magnitude by the military, FEMA, Homeland Security, or any combination thereof is possible given any conceivable leadership talent (and an absence of inivolvement on the part of Louisiana officials) - I only wanted to point out that the speed of the response would make a noticeable difference in the outcome of a large surprise attack, and the evidence thus far shows that the outcome would not be all that good for us.

Will we pay for a level of disaster preparedness that will ensure response to a nuclear attack or something of similar magnitude? Probably not - and not just because of the oft-disparaged tax cuts, but because of a whole list of things that have a large number of Congressmen stubbornly refusing to even consider cutting back on no matter what our other needs are... things like Social Security and Medicare, which last time I checked are much bigger than that tax cut.
