“…German UN investigator Detlef Mehlis…”

Whenever I see Mehlis mentioned in any story the writers always seem to go out of their way to point out he is German. Why is that? He is working under the aegis of the UN after all so why is his nationality such a big deal? Does the fact that he is German make his investigation seem more credible to some? If so, who thinks this way and why?
