We frequently joke among friends that Poland should be considered an Anglosphere nation, because our national traits (self reliance, resourcefullness, love of freedom) are very similar to your core beliefs.

Part of the reason the British aircraft carriers were better armored was that many were built on battle cruiser hulls from WWI. While not as heavily armored as battleships, they were intended to be able to fight with them a bit. Thus, they were more similar to the U.S.S. Saratoga and Lexington (I) rather than the more flimsy carriers built from the ground up following the development of U.S.S. Ranger in the 1930s.

Of course, the Poles helped as best they could in WWII, as did the Canadians (especially at D-Day, if my memory is correct?), Aussies and New Zealanders in that war.
If we're going to have to fight somewhere, it's nice to have those folks helping out whenever possible.

While the British are no longer the greatest military might in the world, it is good to keep in mind that they can still pack a punch (as the Argentines learned twenty-four years ago). When dealing with terrorists, you DON'T need another superstar--just somebody strong enough to take out the guy who would blind-side you.

Too bad the French don't realize this. Thus, the British are still major players while the French are mostly irrelevant.
