Nice of you to notice — there is a great 20 page essay by Jeanne on the difference between American supported authoritarian, and commie supported totalitarian.
I keep thinking of Pinochet vs. Allende; the S. Korean General Chung vs. N. Korean Kim il Sung; the S. Viet guys (what was the leader’s name after we helped Diem get assassinated?) vs. the N. Viet commies; the Shah vs. the Ayotallah. I don’t think much of El Salvador or Nicuragua, but Jeanne did.
