Some Chicago Boyz know each other from student days at the University of Chicago. Others are Chicago boys in spirit. The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago boys including those pictured above.

I think what the journalists miss is that, while there are a bunch of bozos like me on the web, there are also folks here who are eminently more qualified to comment on current events than journalists. If I'm interested in military tribunals, why would I want to hear a journalist's take when I can get the skinny from former federal prosecutor of terrorists, Andy McCarthy? If I want to know about the trade deficit, why would I want to get the story from someone who can't take a first derivative (eg. journalists) when I could go to Cafe Hayek and get analysis from a couple of economic's professors. The list goes on.

The lab where I used to get film developed is closing for good tomorrow. The previous owners sold out a while ago. The recent owners tried to refashion the biz model as digital something or other but didn't succeed. Needless to say, they aren't writing articles complaining about the digital-camera industry.

People and organizations that have been successful at one stage of a technology are rarely successful at the next stage of the technology. The reasons have been well explained by Christensen and Raynor in their book "The Innovator's Solution" (reviewed at my site.) The new technology, which is still in its formative years, never *looks* as impressive as the old. A minimill wasn't as impressive as an integrated steel mill. A biplane dive bomber wasn't as impressive as a battleship. A 1980 PC wasn't much compared to an IBM mainframe. So Rago is following a well-trodden path.

What is a little different, though, is the level of vitriol. Big-steel execs might have discounted the impact of the minimill, but I don't think they felt the need to personally insult their new competitors in the manner felt by so many legacy-media journalists.

No, entertainments is not a word:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/entertainments

I guess that's why I need journalists: so they can make up cute little words!!! But then again, that's also why I need my little sister.

Ginny, you give that Rago guy more credit than he deserves. He writes like a high schooler making love to a thesaurus. He actually used the word "Entertainments." Is that a word?
