Some Chicago Boyz know each other from student days at the University of Chicago. Others are Chicago boys in spirit. The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago boys including those pictured above.

Sanitation and disease were major, often controlling factors in warfare well up into the 20th century. WWII was the first war in which more American soldiers died from enemy action then died of disease.

Sanitation is one of those icky boring factors that history ignores but which play major roles. Professional military officers spend a lot of time and energy laying out camps so as to protect the health of the soldiers. Its a major part of guerrilla warfare.

it was customary in Europe to dump waste in the moat during sieges, usually by throwing it off the wall. This made attacking the city less attractive because an attack required wading through the moat, etc.

I suppose the practice would be effective even if there was no moat.
