The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago boys including those pictured above (we claim no affiliation), and others who helped to liberalize Latin American economies.

Oh, man, what a nostalgia-maker! I used to stop at a store just like that on the way home from school, to buy 2 pennies worth of juice-filled waxy things (I don’t even remember the name of what they were.).

They were called Nik-L-Nip, mainly because they came in a 5 pack and cost (no surprise) a nickel. But they also came in a 2 pack for a pair of pennies. That must have been what you were purchasing.
They were made by the same folks who put out Tootsie Rolls, but they were discontinued in January of this year.
Amazon.com sells them, as does a variety of nostalgic candy companies that you can find online. Better buy some now because the supply is sure to shrink.
It’s good to see the place is still around. I’ve been in there many times but it’s probably been 15-20 years since the last time I was there. It was always a convenient stopping point on the way down to Seneca Locks.

I love these old places. They seem so warm and genuine.
