Compared to mammals, reptiles have small lungs and circulatory systems and much less aerobic capacity. A determined mammal that can avoid being bitten may be able to tire out and subdue a large reptilian predator. I once saw a similar though less dramatic struggle between a raccoon and an iguana. The iguana was quite large as compared to the raccoon, and kept escaping the raccoon’s clutches. But every time the iguana got away he was weaker than before, and the raccoon was eventually able to subdue him.
