Jim - Thanks for doing this. It's the best single piece that I have seen on Palin and her record as governor.

MD: right you are. Still, what a difference Gov.Palin makes with the rest of the candidates.
If only instead of McCain the #1 on the ticket said "Fred D. Thompson"...

Good articles, all. The comments to Jim Bennett's Telgraph article! Hilarious! People really have fun in comments sections, don't they?

The Cato article says libertarians should be 'cautiously optimistic' about Palin. I guess that sums up where I am on this whole Palin thing - cautiously optimistic (with my usual dash of cranky pessimism thrown in. Oh, you know what I mean. Politicians always disappoint and can't possibly be 'all that'). It's just nice to hear talk of small government after eight years of compassionate conservatism, you know? It's only talk, I know...and, hey, I don't think Bush is a bad guy, I just don't buy that whole compassionate conservatism stuff.

I owe a huge hat tip to CB's James McCormick, who has kept me informed on the pipeline deal from a Calgary perspective. The witticism "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin" has been attributed to Louis Mayer, among others. I knew of Sarah Palin before she was devoid of international experience, so to speak. Primarily through following the pipeline deal.

Go back and read the business press prior to the announcement of Palin's candidacy, and she will be mentioned in the context of the deal -- without the moose, the kids, the Eskimos, and all that. Back when she had experience.

Alaska is an even bigger "company town" in regard to the petroleum industry than Texas is. The fact that she gave them a swift kick in the gonads augers well for both her ability to fight political corruption/crony capitalism and her political acumen.
