    Ernst Udet. Possibly one of the best pilots ever. Came to a bad end after getting into bed with the Nazis.

      My memory- possibly faulty- tells me that he committed suicide in 1942 after concluding Germany could not win WW2.

      So he was not only a great pilot but smart as well.
