Some Chicago Boyz know each other from student days at the University of Chicago. Others are Chicago boys in spirit. The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago boys including those pictured above.

You can see a similar situation in Germany. Retired people often move out for the winter to the southern countries of Europe because it's cheaper to live there then stay back home in Germany and pay for the heating. Same thing with Panama, lower taxes, decent health care, why not move there to retire? Plus nice weather all year long :)

Take care, Lorne

My parents sometimes make this mental calculation regarding going back to India to retire. They can make their dollars stretch a lot more.

(their daughter is all, no, no, no, you are staying with ME!!!!)

*I am very close to the family.....

Yes, this is one reason why raising tax rates never raises as much revenue as predicted. The most productive people can usually choose how and when to realize taxable income. On the margin, as tax rates are increased, high earners will increasingly relocate to places where they aren't taxed as much. This is likely to remain true even though the USA attempts to tax its citizens abroad and is attempting to get other countries to cooperate in its tax-collection efforts. People will generally find ways to avoid paying taxes at high rates.
