  • Not Holding My Breath

Posted by James R. Rummel on August 11th, 2009 (All posts by )

The headline reads “Global pressure builds for UN action to free Suu Kyi”.

Because, as we all know from past experience, the UN is just sooo effective at getting oppressive regimes to start making nice.

      Global pressure? Wot dat?

Actually, holding their breath until they’re blue in the face is about all the world’s supporters of Burma’s oppressed can do.

The UN will do what China and Russia tells it to do. Of course, with a Sandinista flunky in charge of the General Assembly, they may very well tell the protesters to shut up and stop spouting neo-colonial plots about Burma’s gas and oil China and India are exploiting with no benefit for the Burmese people.

Of course, allegedly the Burmese are now developing a nuclear weapons program with North Korean help and Chinese approval, so none of this “pressure” matters in the end.

As well, UN Sec. Ban-Ki-Moon is no stranger to coddling dictators.

Suu Kyi won’t be released, but we’ll feel better about ourselves for “doing something”. So in that sense it will work.
