I had posted a news-roundup on the alleged suicide of the Syrian Interior Minister two days ago, as well as some of my own speculations on the matter. Michael Young from Reason magazine’s blog Hit & Run provides background and facts besides some more speculation here, and here.
Most surprising to me is that the deceased Syrian Minister Kanaan actually had good personal relations to murdered former Lebanese PM Hariri. Less surprising: Kanaan had amassed millions, possibly hundreds of millions, of dollars while he was the de-facto ruler of Lebanon.
Right now the two most likely possibilities seem to be that Kanaan was killed so that he couldn’t reveal that Assad had ordered Hariri’s assassination, or that Kanaan was to be made the scapegoat for said assassination.
