OK, guess the senile old t**t has forgotten exactly which country he lives in … and perhaps the decade/century as well. I’d boycott his lame-azz but he hasn’t had a pop hit since I was in grade school.
The irony here is that calypso music, through which Belafonte made his money, was not popular with blacks. It was white kids like me who bought his records. I guess he forgot that.
A my friend today suggested why doesn’t he move to some third world dictatorship since that seems to be what he covets.
Old guys don’t give a shit anymore, so they say what they really think. This guy is saying aloud what many people are saying privately and many more are thinking.
He is an entertainer, a songster with the same influential moral authority as Neil Young and Lady Ga Ga. Who knows, maybe it will be.
This of course, is the consummate wet dream of the African tyrant. Detroit to Djibouti, Cairo to Clarendon, it’s always the same story. Whether you’re an overated Caribbean popinjay, or ex-con mugging in front of a voting precinct, no amount of money, treasure or title can fix what ills you. Many years ago an old-timer gave me a bit of advice, and at the time I gasped, thinking how awful and narrow minded he was. Sure wish he was still around to hear my thoughts nowadays.

He loved communist thugs when he was far younger, so it’s not senility.
Bill Brandt “why doesn’t he move to some third world dictatorship since that seems to be what he covets.”
It certainly would be poetic justice for him to suffer the fate he wishes so cheerfully on those who disagree with him.
