Chicago Safe Spaces Tour, 9-10 April

Sycophants, satellites, holobionts, camp followers, groupies, collaborators, stalkers, uncommitted delegates, and newsletter subscribers are invited to check your privilege and join me and a few others in a series of environments where you can be without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome or challenged on account of biological sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, cultural background, age, or physical or mental ability. Well, OK, maybe not all of those, but age, certainly, and physical/mental ability after stuffing yourself with pizza and ingesting ethanol, will have protected status. Join for any or all of the following itinerary. For IFF purposes, I’ll wear something distinctive (ie, not maroon-and-white), which will be announced in this forum by late Friday the 8th.

Saturday 9 April
~4:15 PM CDT – Rendezvous outside a brand-new safe space, the so-called Campus North Residential Commons, a/k/a Pierce the Younger, 5500 S University (southwest corner of 55th & University). Stroll southward, and possibly westward into the quads, but only if the weather seems safe enough.
5:00 PM CDT – Arrive at the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore, 5751 S Woodlawn, for browsing/shopping in a safely stimulating environment. Heed all trigger warnings regarding spending too much money.
6:00 PM CDT – Ejection from Seminary Co-Op when it closes. Proceed northeastward at a safe pace, to …
6:30 PM CDT – Giordano’s Pizza, 5311 S Blackstone, because I’m not flying up there without tucking into some deep-dish. NB: this location is BYOB; C2H6O is obtainable 3½ blocks west at Kimbark Beverage Shoppe.
~8:00 PM CDT – No cis-nightlife for us! Transition to Bar Louie, 5500 S Shore.

Sunday 10 April
(Everything here is tentative, contingent, approximate, and subject to revision; input welcomed.)
~8:00 AM CDT – Or perhaps a bit later, but in any case, a leisurely breakfast at the Lake Shore Café, 4900 S LSD.
~10:00 AM CDT – Powell’s Books, 1501 E 57th.
~11:00 AM CDT – 57th Street Books, 1301 E 57th.
~12:00 PM CDT – Oriental Institute Museum, 1155 E 58th.
~2:00 PM CDT – Lunch at Salonica Restaurant, 1440 E 57th.
~4:00 PM CDT – Walk the quads; photography, etc.
~6:00 PM CDT – Woodlawn Tap, 1172 E 55th.

  1. Hmm… I may be able to make that Sunday midday block. I used to live a block away from Powell’s on the north side. Great selection. I think they closed it.

  2. I’m going to be in Chicago about mid-June. If any activities are planned, I’d love to know.

  3. “Pierce the Younger, 5500 S University”

I lived in Pierce the Elder, 50 years ago. I am still traumatized. It was a horrific experience.
