5 thoughts on “What Chicago Boyz Readers Are Reading (January 2016)”

  1. I sat down the other night to watch the first episode of “Rome.” My wife was there too and both our jaws dropped at the opening scene of the sexual activity. I realized it must be a British series, even on HBO.

  2. All of HBO’s shows seem to include a certain amount of sex as a requirement these days. Not sure why, I don’t really think it adds anything. I will add that it’s a somewhat complex plot with a lot of characters interacting. It took me 2-3 episodes to feel like the story was really underway. I’ll also say I gave copies to my son and one of my daughters, both married and in their 30’s. Both liked it a lot.

  3. Well, it was entertaining , once the shock wore off. “The girl with the Dragon Tattoo” was pretty racy but still stopped short of frontal nudity.

I understand a movie with actual sexual intercourse is shooting or soon will be in Hollywood. I expect the sex scenes will be shot somewhere else, of course, as Los Angeles is now requiring condoms and goggles in porn flicks.

  4. One eBook I thought I ordered through Chicago Boyz was Carlyle’s “On Heros and Heroism.” I’m half way through his series of lectures from 1840.

This is a fantastic book! Very insightful. Not so much part of the “great men ARE history” school but it says a lot about the soul as driver of the course of human events.

Great turns of phrases too. One example was of a decadent society – “Quacks pretending to command over dupes” – so true of today.

  5. They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45

I recently read this. The author interviews 10 former Nazis of the “little people” category. One conclusion: Hitler had a lot of popular support.
