The government is not the parent in this family. The government is one of the teenage children we hire to do some work around the place (and if you keep screwing up, we’ll give the job to your younger sister, even if she doesn’t (yet) know how to start the lawnmower). The citizens are the parents, not you. This is the center of what you don’t get – and neither does more than 50% of the electorate. You are not the parents.

Oh, I think the metaphor went further than that – they behave (or think themselves to be) not so much as parents but as social services workers who interfere into people’s life, ruin families of the innocent and neglect to pay attention to real offenders. Didactic, self-righteous, condescending, ignorant and meddling – people whose business is to destroy, under the guise of improving.
The blog name “Assistant Village Idiot” makes me think of “Chad Vader, Day-Manager,” – that most hilarious YouTube comedy series.
