Further Thoughts on Service

On Service:  I tend to agree with the comments about red state/blue state divisions, though clearly it is often a matter of rural/urban and mompop/corporate.  Engagement takes energy and minimal intelligence, but most of all it takes an attitude.  Tailoring service to customers is generally best done by widely distributed responsibility and encouragement of innovation.  Shannon’s observations are good. Establishing a relationship requires some time – a large turnover of either customers or workers means that the relationship can’t grow.  Knowing customers, we soon expect that customer to add the extra change that keeps his pockets cleared – though such an exchange was surprising the first time it happened.  After a while, a customer knows what the business can do and a business knows what the customer is likely to like.  In the old days, clerks at stores would put aside certain dresses they knew their customers would like; clerks would step into the dressing room and discuss exactly how a bra should fit.  But the temporary nature of workers, the shifting clientele – all these make such interactions impossible.

Booze and Chickens

Many people call my town of Madison, Wisconsin “67 square miles surrounded by reality”.  Honestly, if you can handle certain things it is a nice place to live.  One of the things you will need to be able to handle is the super liberal culture that you will be immersed in once here.  I have a lot of fun with it.  I moved here from Rockford, Illinois 15 years ago and to this day am amazed at what goes on.  The two cities are separated by only 70 miles, but are worlds apart.

The Madison City Council is famous for wasting time on declarations that have no effect other than making a statement.  They have had votes on impeaching presidents, taking stands on foreign conflicts, and many other things that will drive most normal people insane.  All of the hand wringing and time wasting costs MONEY – and, in the end, it is my tax money that they are wasting.  It is enough to drive one crazy unless you get used to it.  Remember, the city council is made up of mostly Democrats and “Progressives”.

The Great Flood of ’08, Continued…

I am fortunate that I didn’t receive any more water in my basement, nor did I get water at my place of business.  From what I have seen driving around here, Madison got off pretty well so far (knock on wood).  The only thing that may affect us is that we are partially isolated now.  The interstates running north (90) and east (94) are closed due to water overtopping the bridges.  This will affect my business slightly, as I have freight coming from Milwaukee today that I don’t think will make it.  Speaking of business…
