The Edinburgh Festival – and how!

The Edinbugh Festival begins in Scotland’s capital city tomorrow and despite the fireworks of creativity that it always delivers, I think this year is going to be hostage to “Jihad! The Musical!” – “A madcap romp through the wacky world of international terrorism”.

It was written by an Old Etonian and a 25 year old female compatriot.

The Edinburgh Festival opens on tomorrow (Monday), and I await the reviews with interest. In the meantime, here is one of the songs, “I Wanna Be Like Osama” for your evening viewing pleasure.

The chap who plays Osmana is stardom bound, that’s for sure. I’ll let you know when the reviews come out.

  1. Well, it’s still pretty damn funny, chorus-line of pink burkas and all. I’ve been insisting for years that we have to laugh at these people. It’s probably what they fear most… torrents of ridicule.

  2. SgtMom- Agreed. Confident people don’t mind being laughed at. They’ll often join in. But it infuriates insecure, inferior people, which is why they’ve written to the Prime Minister claiming the musical’s “offensive”. Even the ones living in Scotland are so thick they thought they could get it taken off by pleading hurt feelings.

Anyone who knows the first thing about the Scots (and Prime Minister Gordon Brown is one himself) knows, they cannot be bullied. And the Festival has a long reputation asan equal opportunity offender.

I laughed out loud at the burqa-clad “chorus line” and that line about waiting “until the CIA decides what I am worth”. My guess, you will be seeing “Jihad! The Musical” in NYC some time early next year, reworked, tightened up and very funny.

I am waiting for the reviews. It’s 10:30 p.m. in Britain just now, so the papers should be out in an hour and a half or so.
