The “ooga-chaka-ooga-ooga” version of “Hooked on a Feeling” was popularized due to the selfless and heroic efforts of residents of Henderson House in Pierce Tower dormitory in the early ’70s. As related several years later by Paul Sally, then chairman of the math department, it worked like this: one of the guys (Henderson was an all-male house then) heard the new cover version somewhere and decided that it was so stunningly awful it simply had to get airplay. So he got a bunch of Hendersonians to call local radio stations in Chicago to request it, at every opportunity. Soon it began to be heard locally. This was deemed insufficient, however, so they began calling their friends at various other schools, eg MIT, to get them to call radio stations in their cities. The rest is history. A classic social hack, as it were.
