Metric Remix

One of my favorite newer bands is Metric. “Help I’m Alive” is one of their biggest songs.

I follow them on Facebook and recently they had a contest where you could remix this song, and could win a grand and a chance at some sort of record deal. The remixes are nothing short of amazing. Take a listen here if you are interested. I am blown away at how talented some of the people are that remixed this song.

u r doing it wrong

I am going to be honest with you, unilke 99% of bloggers out there and admit I don’t know what in gods name is going on in Egypt. I assume the people don’t want Mubarak in there any more but I am totally ignorant as to what sides there are, what options there may be and who heads the opposition. I have seen a lot of footage however.

I also know nothing about my car. If it breaks I am screwed and completely at the mercy of a mechanic. I also don’t play professional football. My body would surely break in two the first time I got hit by someone like Brian Urlacher or Lance Briggs.

So what do you get when you combine Egyptian riots with someone who thinks they can be a professional at something they really have no clue at? Dudes on emaciated horses with short weapons getting their asses kicked.

I cannot fathom how some guy who has no experience with riding a horse in riot type conditions would just mount up and head into the fray and think that is a great plan. The riders had no protection on the horses, and the horses surely had no experience with riot control. The riders were taken down in a millisecond as were the horses at times. I am positive the horses were not shoed properly, and I imagine these horses were completely out of condition as were the riders. I have seen other footage of horse mounted guys riding past TANKS, as well as one dude on a camel riding past a tank.

Hopefully the riots will calm and everyone will be OK, but this dog ain’t gonna hunt.

Wisconsin Makes A Move On Illinois Business

Our new Governor (Wisconsin) Scott Walker has signed legislation giving businesses that relocate to Wisconsin two years “free” – no corporate OR personal income taxes:

MADISON (WKOW) — Governor Scott Walker has signed a bill that gives income tax breaks for companies that relocate to Wisconsin.

The bill will forgive corporate and personal taxes for two years for companies that move to the state. The company could not have been located in Wisconsin for at least two years in order to qualify

I think they mean personal income taxes such as if you were running the company as a pass through like an LLC. I assume that is what they are talking about. Any way you slice it, this is fantastic news.

This got through the legislature with lightning speed, helped out by the fact that all three of our branches are Republican controlled now up here behind the cheddar curtain. I also read today that the public employee unions are getting ready for some very bad news for them in the near future.

We have just begun with the Walker administration, but I am very hopeful and happy by this stroke. Walker also sent back the Obama buck$ that would have started out the sham “high speed” rail network that would have been a boondoggle for the ages.

We may as well pick off what is left of the Illinois corpse before other states do.

Hopefully Walker will end up being a star like some other up and comers such as Mitch Daniels of Indiana.

Does Egypt = Thailand?

I have been practicing Muay Thai for almost four years now. I read a variety of information sources about Muay Thai, and sort of live that life – I guess you could say.

Over the years of commenting on different blogs and boards I have become friends with more than one professional Muay Thai fighter actually in Thailand, along with many people who go there to train in Muay Thai for pleasure, and some people who go to Thailand to report on the Muay Thai scene.

When the protests in Thailand erupted a few months ago, I was of course scared for the many acquaintances that I knew were over there, on the way there, or on the way back. The shots of the violence in the streets were a bit scary. I admit they weren’t anything like the tanks in the streets of Egypt, but the riot police was called in to Bangkok and the army was “on call”.

Over and over my friends in Thailand reported that not only were they not concerned about the rioting, but that outside of a small, few square mile area of Bangkok that you were really in no danger at all. Outside of Bangkok life was proceeding as usual, and many people didn’t even know what was going on outside of their small towns.

I wonder if it is this way in Egypt. I haven’t heard reports of any city blowing up besides Cairo, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening, of course. I guess time will tell.

You Are The First Responder

I will leave it up to much smarter people than me here and elsewhere to write long essays and columns about the events in Tuscon over the weekend and tease out the deeper meanings.

I have a few simple takeaways.

I still haven’t heard what the shooter was using. I am guessing a .22 – could a person like the Congresswoman really survive anything bigger going all the way through her head? They said that around 5% of all people who get shot in the head survive. Amazing.

I wish the Congresswoman well. I feel really bad for all of the victims who will get washed out of this tragedy since the media will want to follow the Congresswoman’s story (this is akin to the victims of the Deepwater Horizon getting washed out of that story). Even a kid died. I heard this morning that is was Dallas Green’s granddaughter.

Our media is really stupid. Still. And Forever.

Most importantly – you are the first responder. Not the cops, not security, you. I don’t know how the attacker was subdued, but I can only assume some guys eventually tackled him when he was reloading and I assume they beat the hell out of him to subdue him. In any situation such as this, all the cell phones, beepers, pagers, and iPads in the world won’t help you. You and others have to take charge and attack the attacker. To this day I don’t understand how all those people at Virginia Tech died, allowing themselves to be shot execution style. I will at least die “with my boots on” to coin a phrase. My actions might not stop the killer, but at least I can try.
