Some Chicago Boyz know each other from student days at the University of Chicago. Others are Chicago boys in spirit. The blog name is also intended as a good-humored gesture of admiration for distinguished Chicago School economists and fellow travelers.

One of the few good things that Jefferson did as president was to build the spar deck frigates, which were about half way between a ship of the line and a frigate by British standards. There were six of them and, had Jefferson built ships of the line, the 1812 war would have been quite different. The US had a strong tradition of seamanship and the big frigates were overmanned, in contrast to the British pressed crews.
