I’ve already posted this over on Arcturus, but Lex asked that I share it here also. I’m noticing several interesting lessons in my favorite topics — project management (especially risk management) and public perception of large scientific endeavors.

And Speaking of Scalps
Add another to the long, long list of U of C Nobelists … (hat tip: Bill Roule). Any doubts that everyone’s favorite major South Side university can credit itself with this one are dispelled by this telling passage:
… although he wasn’t socially adept, “I fit right in,” [Wilczek] recalled. “It was fortunate to me that the U. of C. didn’t stress sociality,” he joked.

Overheard at Denny’s: A Cautionary Tale
“There’s these people — I think they’re called ‘bloggers.’ They dig up dirt on people, and make it sound just plausible enough … they like to bring down famous people, like in the media … they live to score points that way.”

If America Were Iraq, What Would It Have Been Like?
In the spirit of ken’s post, below … currently tied for #12 on Blogdex, Juan Cole paints a compelling picture with numbers:
The population of the US is over 11 times that of Iraq, so a lot of statistics would have to be multiplied by that number.
Thus, violence killed 300 Iraqis last week, the equivalent proportionately of 3,300 Americans. What if 3,300 Americans had died in car bombings, grenade and rocket attacks, machine gun spray, and aerial bombardment in the last week? That is a number greater than the deaths on September 11, and if America were Iraq, it would be an ongoing, weekly or monthly toll.
There’s much more, and it’s worth reading, so graze on over and read it.
All done? Great. Now for The Rest Of The Story:
